Bitcoin in Southeast Asia: Revolution or Relic? That's the question swirling in my mind, and frankly, it's a question Blockstream Wallet needs to answer fast if it wants to stay relevant here.

Okay, let's be blunt. We're not in Kansas anymore. This isn’t a Silicon Valley boardroom full of Bitcoin maximalists. Southeast Asia breathes innovation. We’re a place of entrepreneurs, of digital natives jumping over clunky, old-school infrastructure. We are not waiting for the future to come, we’re creating it right now. And that future? When we zoom in, things are definitely looking a lot more multi-faceted than Blockstream Wallet wants you to think.

Bitcoin Only? Really?

Seriously? Bitcoin only? Especially in a region that seems almost saturated with altcoins, DeFi projects, and NFTs? It’s the equivalent of arriving to a street food festival with nothing except a bowl of plain white rice. Of course, rice is the staple, but who wants only rice?

Look, I get it. Bitcoin is the OG. It's the granddaddy of crypto. In Southeast Asia, we're not just about respecting our elders, we're about building on their foundations. We’re a melting pot of sorts, a particularly energetic one that includes the aforementioned cultures, languages, and, yes, cryptocurrencies. Consumers and businesses are experimenting widely with an array of cryptocurrencies. They’re experimenting with everything from Solana and Cardano to freakin’ meme coins that say they’ll send you to the moon—well, at least buy you a pho bowl!

Blockstream Wallet’s Bitcoin-only ethos seems… canny. It’s as if they haven’t done the most basic of due diligence to see what’s truly happening on the ground here. Are they just taking it for granted that Southeast Asians don’t want or need anything but Bitcoin? That's not just ignorant, it’s insulting.

Security Fortress, Privacy Desert?

Blockstream’s stated focus on security over all else is something to be proud of. That multi-sig setup instills a layer of quaint, old-school cybersecurity confidence. With Blockstream holding one of the keys, I must admit that it gives me pause. What about privacy? In an area where monetary monitoring is increasingly difficult, privacy is key. For some it’s not a luxury, it’s literally a matter of life or death.

The absence of even the most basic advanced privacy features such as UTXO management is a big miss. Retooling a regulatory fortress with impermeable glass windows. Sure, you're protected from direct attacks, but everyone can see what you're doing inside.

Let’s get real, security and privacy are two sides of the same coin. Imagine what happens when a collective lack of privacy undermines your security. If your transactions can be traced, you are the target.

This isn't about advocating for illegal activities. It’s about shielding yourself from bad actors, from those who would exploit the weak. It’s not simply for the reasons of financial autonomy, of controlling your own money how you see fit without an ever-present surveillance and judgment.

Southeast Asia Demands More

Blockstream Wallet feels like a product designed for a Western audience, with little consideration for the unique needs and aspirations of Southeast Asia. It's a classic example of a one-size-fits-all approach that simply doesn't work in a region as diverse and dynamic as ours.

We’ll need wallets that can accommodate multiple cryptos. These wallets should be free for users, provide better privacy protections than existing alternatives, and be intuitive to use for crypto novices and crypto veterans alike. What we need are wallets that are designed for Southeast Asia, not wallets that are designed and then marketed to Southeast Asia.

I see the hunger in the eyes of young entrepreneurs, the determination in the voices of developers, the hope in the hearts of ordinary people who believe that crypto can offer them a better future. That future can’t be built on this legacy technology along with an imposition of Western-centric ideologies. Its future success will depend on creativity and inclusivity. We’ll be working to unpack the special context, challenges and opportunities of the Southeast Asia region.

So then, Blockstream, will you change with the times, grow up, and learn to become a player in the massively positive and relevant crypto future of Southeast Asia? Or are you happy to be a blockchain dino, a holdover from a previous age. The choice is yours. Which is why I refuse to bet against the ingenuity and resilience of Southeast Asia. Or have clout-chasing libertarians seize the field, and they’ll create their own crypto future, with or without you. And to that effect, I urge our smart developers and entrepreneurs to build new blockchain solutions specifically designed for our community. Stop building for others, build for us!
